Tom Hafey, the legendary AFL Hall of Fame coach, was Richmond's coach during the 1973 VFL Season.
During the same season Richmond, lead by Hafey won the Grand Final against Carlton by 30 points (16.20.116 to 12.14.86), their eighth VFL Championship.
