Some people prefer having enough money to live on. At the time, the lifetime earnings of a Baseball player were less than that of a day laborer. Most players had to take jobs in the off-season just to pay the rent. When they retired, they got a grand total of ZILCH for their years of service to the club -- many died in complete destitution.

The "Black Sox" scandal of 1919

The Chicago White Sox conspired with gamblers to throw the World Series in 1919. The team was nicknamed the "Black Sox." Eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the series against the Cincinnati Reds. The eight players included "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Eddie Cicotte, Claude "Lefty" Williams, Buck Weaver, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Fred McMullin, Charles "Swede" Risberg; and outfielder Oscar "Happy" Felsch. These players were banned from professional baseball for life.

Did shoeless joe Jackson throw the World Series?

Shoeless Joe Jackson in my opinion did not throw the 1919 World Series. When you hit .375 and one third of your hits are for extra bases, i don't even know how you can speculate that he tried to throw it. He also had the most RBI's (6), and the most Runs scored (5) by the White Sox. Jackson also had the only homerun throughout the 1919 World Series. So sports experts and any person in general can think what they want, but in my opinion he did not try to throw the 1919 World Series.
