Am looking at a 1994 Chevy s10 with a 4.3l Vortec 4x4the truck has 199900 miles on it and the motor was rebuilt 7200 miles ago what problems do they have with age and what problems are reoccurring?
The vehicle you are looking at is overall good vehicle but there are some potential issues to be aware of: 1) issues with the instrument cluster (especially the all digital). On mine everything went dead except for the spedo (and it wasn't the light bulbs), Chevy wanted $1100 for a new one; however I found a place online (www.mrwizhard.com) that rebuilds them for $200 - $300 depending on the warranty you want and I was very satisified with the results (turn arround time is 1-2 weeks) for saving that much money I could wait. 2) the ABS Control Module (if this vehicle is ABS equiped). It is an item that just goes with time and is expensive to replace. 3) a unique problem I had with mine was the transfer case (controls the 2/4 wheel drive) would slip back and forth between 2w, 4w hi and 4w lo. It is a bit of a pain at 15 mph but could be catistrophic at 55 mph (could snap a crank shaft). If this is the issue disconnect the control cable, cover the connector in a plastic bag and secure it out of the way. The actual fix in my instance was some kind of electronic sensor that threaded or plugged into the transfer case, the part was under $50.
