He was President of Washington College. But his health was failing badly, and friends were shocked at his haggard appearance. After his death it became Washington & Lee College. He only survived the war by five years, and regrettably never got round to writing the memoirs he often talked about. They would have been of great interest. Some of his letters written to his generals and to Confederate President Jefferson Davis do provide some insights on Lee's view of the war.
