I'm assuming you must live in the western hemisphere. The reasons that such a large percentage of the west favors Japanese martial arts are several. One is because most of the Japanese arts are of a more linear and less complicated form which favors the west's more aggressive and direct mentality. Another reason is that many military soldiers brought the Japanese arts back with them from their stations in Okinawa and Japan. The Japanese have, since the Feudal era, been willing to share their arts with the outside world where the Chinese have been very secretive about theirs. Much of the Chinese styles is still misunderstood by the west but with the internet and a more open Chinese mentality, you will surely begin to see more exposure...however it may not be adopted quite so quickly by westerners still. Best wishes.
The martial law in our town stripped the freedom of all of the individuals, we were like drones, with all of the freedom and expression of life gone, and all of our energy focused on work, and nothing else.
Most martial arts are based around either self defense or attacking, but one of the least aggressive, most self defense related martial art that I have encountered has been the Japanese art of Aikido. Aikido is based around walking stances and using an attacker's energy against them. Taekwondo is also a very effective form of self defense. Virtually all systems of Martial Art are potentially good for self defense if they are taught correctly by qualified instructors, and if the student trains diligently, and applies the art appropriately in the right way at the right time.
Judo IS a Japanese martial art, developed in 1882 by professor Jigoro Kano when he was in his early twenties, in order to preserve the long traditions and culture of the samurai arts, but updating them to better suit the modern times. His intention was to create a modern martial art, witch would make the practitioners good members of society under the banners of seiryoku-zen'yo and Jita-kyoei, or maximum efficient use of energy and mutual benefit for self and others. Judo quickly became popular, and judokas defeated many jujitsu champions
