no, if you work hard enough anything can be achieved. Some tennis players were at the bottom of their junior program but worked very hard
Ratings for hockey in Canada are greater than any country in the world. Hockey is not only a sport for us but a vital part of our culture. There are few Canadians, including females, who haven't played hockey at some level. In fact we not only follow the NHL pros, but women's hockey and junior hockey. The top rated telecasts for TSN have been Canada's games at the World U20 Junior Championships.
Almost all coaches at the youth age are volunteers. Coaches that make money are high school's, junior's, and a few top Canadian and American AAA hockey programs.
The German world junior hockey team is pretty good. They'll be playing in the Top Division of the 2014 World Juniors.

The easiest track to NCAA hockey is through the Junior hockey circuit. If you search any of these junior leagues -- the USHL is the top U.S. one that comes to mind -- there is likely tryout information for these teams. Many players from the CCHA, one of college hockey's top conferences come from leagues like the USHL and Canadian Junior leagues like the BCHL. One other route is through prep schools with storied hockey programs. These might include Shattuck-St. Mary's in Minnesota, Detroit Catholic Central in Michigan, Park Tudor in Indianapolis or any number of schools out east. These teams generally compete at the highest level of high school hockey because high school hockey, or, like Shattuck St. Mary's, play high levels of travel hockey (i.e. Midget AAA) with high quality players. At one point No. 1 overall pick Sidney Crosby (joining the Penguins) and No. 3 overall pick Jack Johnson (selected by Hurricanes, joining the University of Michigan) played at Shattuck St. Mary's together, with a handful of guys who play at elite college programs around the country.
