Which is more powerful an airsoft gun or a paintball gun?

If you are looking for a die hard passion and have money to put into it go with paintball. If you are looking for something fun to do every once in a while for cheap then go with airsoft

Air soft is better in that it is much more realistic, cheaper, and can be played in a larger variety of environments (you can exactly play paint ball in your neighborhood, can you?). However, paint ball allows for fairer game play. This can be solved by buying paint ball BB's (paint balls in BB form) which are more expensive but less expensive then real paint balls.

Basically, air soft is better if you are playing with honest friends or you don't have a paint ball arena in your backyard, but if you're playing with large teams or for competition and you have the money, paint ball is the way to go.

Paintball guns can be adjusted to higher settings, and most airsoft guns cannot be adjusted. So in that respect the Paintball gun is "more powerful"

However I suggest that you quit looking at the guns in terms of "powerful" as high settings on most guns can cause injury to other players.....and that is the very reason paintball guns are adjustable. 99% of paintball fields demand that players adjust their markers to a safe level (280fps is common). Nobody would have a "more powerful" marker, and thus everyone will be playing fair and safe.
