From what I have heard and my own experience, I think Kershaw is the better of the two.

A person who just wants a knife and they have no real interest in knives a Gerber will probably be fine. However, if you want a knife with more quality look for Kershaw, Benchmade, Spyderco, or SOG fixed-blades(their folders are known to develope blade play). CRKT knives are also good, but they use low quality blade steel for the price.

Every Spyderco knife I have ever owned has been great. Absolutely no complaints here. Listed below is a site where you can find a large selection reasonably priced.
I know it was a Spyderco fully serrated knife. I don't know the exact model though.
People can buy a Kershaw Scallion knife on the internet. It's a legal knife that is durable, looks great and has a great performance. It's perfect for just anything.
The Kershaw Blur has a 3 3/8" blade. Closed, the knife is 4.5" and open it is 7 7/8".
There were and are number of great custom knife makers and factory knives. In no particular order, Lovless, Goddard, Randall, Wilson, Benchmade, Spyderco and many others. Who is the best is highly subjective and there is no answer.
