there is no best at eventing but some find heavy horses ie irish draught do very well when crossed with a throughbred
there a some breeds that do better than others

Hanoverian The Hanoverian is a warmblood bred specifically for jumping, eventing, and dressage. For children, Connemara ponies are also really good jumpers - I once had a 14hand Connemara that could jump 1.2meters I believe that there is no specific breed of horse that is "best" for jumping. I think that a breed can have good jumpers, but there are other breeds to that can produce some superb jumpers! The horse that placed 3rd at the Rolex Kentucky 3 Day Event 2010 was an off the track Thoroughbred (OTTB). However MANY MORE horses are brilliant for riding!!! Another breed is the Dutch Warmblood! The show jumpers in the Olympics use these horses because of their powerful hind legs!

Thoroughbreds are breed for speed and stamina so if you were to want a really quick horse then yes they are the best breed. If you mean the best muscle machine then a heavy horse (Clydesdale, shire, Suffolk, Ardennes etc.) or Brittish native ponies (fell, dales, highland, Shetland-for its size) are ideal. Thoroughbreds do go lame easily and need very specific diets and training programmes so are not by far the easiest horse to look after. Also, the thoroughbred is sometimes ill-tempered and difficult to handle (although some are BFGs).

It really depends on what type of riding you are interested in. If you like western then you may want a stock-type horse such as a Quarter Horse, Paint, or Appaloosa, or a cross breed of one of these breeds. If you are an intermediate rider than find a Quarter Horse, ect that is appropriate for your riding level. If you like huntseat or jumpers you have your choice of warmbloods, Thoroughbreds or some of the newer breeding Quarter Horses. They are very tall, have a lot of TB blood, but still have a pleasant termperment. But again, no matter the breed, the horse should match your riding level.
