The reeler or fisherman since bait chice is his (her) decision
Fish like bright colored bait, that is usually shimmering (is sparkly or a shiny color like silver) because it catches their attention. So, whether you are using real fish for bait or plastic/ fake bait, look for those 2 things!

Powdered sugar and/or sweetened condensed milk works great for me. I make a killer cheese dip bait. Sticky, sticky, sticky and catches fish too.
Cured bait is live bait that have been been kept for 24 hours or more. Many times bait is injured when they are netted and the injured fish take a day before they die off. If you get non cured bait the fish you put on your hook may be injured and in the process of dying but hasn't had the time to die yet because they were just netted that morning. This leads to your bait being lifeless and slow in the water. Cured bait gives the injured fish time to die so you are sure you are getting only the healthy bait fish which are left.
A herring is a bait fish. They are a rather large bait fish, however they are. They are similar to bunker. You can additionally eat it. It is a very good bait for striped bass. When you use it for bait, normally cut it up because of its size. However, you can use it as bait as the whole fish.
Bait fish and small organism tend to be swept up by fast moving water. This allows larger fish to feed more easily as the bait is more concentrated in these areas.
Any bait can catch some fish at sometime. Grapes though are not a good bait for fish in general as they are not a natural food of any fish.
To use as 'fish bait'.
Generally no it is not the best bait. Trout and carp both will take corn as bait but bait needs to be specific to the fish you are trying to catch.
