Generally, when it's your head bolts use a crossing pattern, starting in the center working your way out. jr
Starting on a diagonal pair of carb bolts, tighten the pair to 3 ft lbs, then the opposite diagonal pair to 3 ft lbs and finally all 4 bolts to 12 ft lbs.
There are five valve cover bolts (since this is an SOHC engine it's also called a cam cover); two longer bolts in the rear and three shorter bolts in the front. You will need to remove the spark plug wires and the wire harness located on the left, front of the cover, as well as a hose on the rear left corner to remove the cover. The bolts have a 10mm head. The bolts are tightened starting with the front, middle bolt, then back right, back left, front right, and front left. They are tightened to 86 in-lbs and it is very common to over-torque them and snap them off.
Starting from the left hand side on the back of the head 5328 starting from the left hand side on the front of the head 7146 Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 44 ft.lbs (60 N-m) in the order shown in illustration. Use the J 36660-A torque angle meter in order to rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 95 degrees. Tighten the bolts in sequence to the the specified torque. With all the bolts tightened, make a second pass tightening all the bolts an additional 95°. Remember, 95° is just a little more than a 1/4 turn, not 1/2 turn, or from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock on the dial. Do not tighten beyond this specification, otherwise the bolts will be overstressed and the gaskets may suffer damage.
