James Naismith created the game of Basketball in 1891. He was a physical education professor at Springfield College in Massachusetts (same place where the first basketball game/court was created). He needed a way to keep his gym class (a.k.a. the YMCA) active and occupied during the winter months, thus, the game of basketball was created.
