The Turf Hotel -formerly called The Chequers- was in Chequers Street, St. Albans quite close to Nomansland where the long considered "first steeplechase" in England was thought to have been run around 1820. However, the first known Steeplechase was The Loyalty Cup, run over 4 mile course between Ormskirk and Aughton in Lancashire which was dated 1760. Standhouse Lane in Aughton still has remains of one of the 'grandstands'. This race was eventually transferred some 5 miles down the road to Maghull called the Grand Liverpool Annual Steeplechase and in 1838 was moved to a new course then being built by William Lynn at Aintree when the rather long winded name was reduced to The Grand National.
