Trotsky was in Sukhum recuperating and receiving treatment for an illness. He had been on a train to Sukhum and was in the railway station at Tiflis when he received a telegram from Stalin that Lenin had died. Trotsky telephoned Moscow and was told the funeral would be on the coming Saturday, that he could not make it back in time and that he should remain there taking his treatments. They had lied to Trotsky about the date. The funeral was actually held on Sunday, one day later. Trotsky could easily have made it back to Moscow by then. Stalin deliberately misled Trotsky as to the date of the funeral to make Trotsky look bad in the eyes of the party members.
