It can be any color its on the front side of the block right by the starter and some cars are equiped with a housing which has a filter inside of it and has to be removed and when replacing it dont use a fram use a wix or K&N remember you pay for what you get if its cheep its junk.

The thermostat is located on a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero in the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is located on the rear side of the engine block.
the gas filter on the 2000 alero is just in front of gas tank. you have to jackup the car.
towards the rear, just ahead of the fuel tank.

Take the old one out and put the new one in. You will have to remove the rubber snorkel from filter to intake plenum in order to get at the filter.

The Alero is made by Oldsmobile not Chrysler. My first suspicion would be a failed fuel pump or clogged fuel filter.
