your oil filter on a Ford Escort should be positioned on the very back of the block under you altenator. the best and easiest way to get it is to jack it up and get under the car and use an oil filter wrench until loose enough to get it finger tight. BE CAREFUL, DO NOT GET UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE UNLESS IT IS PROPERLY HELD WITH A JACK STAND.
