Skateboarding mainly originated from surfing, in California. when the surfers were bored, or when there were low waves, they would ride skateboards around for fun and for balance. these skateboards usually were cheap planks of wood with wheels from some rollerskates on the bottom

Skateboarding became popular in Venice Beach, Santa Monica, and other areas in Southern California. Venice was once called Dogtown where it mainly began among surfers such as Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams, Tony Alva, Allen Sarlo, and Chris Cahill. They were known as the Z-Boys (Zephyr Competition Team). You can look it up on Wikipedia and IMDB lists movies and documentaries.
