Ballet wasn't "invented." It developed over time as has all art forms. Louis XIV is said to have influenced the consoildation of ballet, and at this time it was a group of men, wearing huge costumes performing for the king and the court. The stories of the ballet would vary, but usually were comments on the political views of the day. This did not always please the king, so more light frilly entertainment was performed. Ballet was also performed on horses, in stadiums, like football is today. The ballet would be performed with riders and horses slowly /quickley 'dancing'. This would have been quite amazing to watch. In Spain dancing horses are still popular, and this is related to ballet. Ballet started out in the 15th century in France. It wasn't really anything like ballet is today. It was more like ballroom dancing in heavy, clunky costumes and shoes. Over time, it evolved into something more gymnastic and acrobatic like it is today. Women were forbidden to dance it, really. But the whole structure of ballet has changed from top to bottom. The clothing has become much lighter and revealing and the steps and movements are much more freeing.

To which of Degas' works of ballet do you refer? To my knowledge, Degas is best known for paintings, drawings and bronzes of ballerinas and race horses. I am not familiar with a work specifically entitled "Ballet Girl", but would welcome an opportunity to be enlightened.
