There have actually been three outdoor games played in the NHL up to the end of the 2008-09 season. The first was November 22, 2003 in Edmonton, AB between the Oilers and Canadians and was called the Heritage Classic. Montreal won 4-3.
The next "ice bowl" was played in Orchard Park, NY, home field for the Buffalo Bills football team. It was played between the Buffalo Sabres as the home team and the Pittsburgh Penguins. This was the first of what may become a traditional "Winter Classic" game to be played annually in the NHL. The Pens won the game 2-1 in a shoot-out. A record crowd of over 71,000 people attended.
The 2009 Winter Classic was between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings and held in Chicago's "home" field of Wrigley Field. Normally the home of the Cubs. Chicago jumped out to an early lead, but Detroit won the game 6-4.
Ironically, due to injuries and trades, goaltender Ty Conklin was one of the starting goalies for all three of the NHL outdoor games played. He lost with the Oilers in 2003, but won the game for the Pens in 2008 and Detroit in 2009.
