The FIVB World Cup is a men's and women's volleyball competition. Created in 1965 (men) and 1973 (women), it is an international qualification event for the Olympic Games. It is not to be confused with the FIVB World Championship or the FIVB World League/FIVB World Grand Prix.

1965 - Soviet Union (Russia) defeated Poland to become the first Men's world cup winner

(The Soviets have been in the top 3 in this event 10 times which is more than any team and have won it more than anyone with 6 victories (1965, 1977, 1981, 1991, 1999, 2011))

1973 - Soviet Union (Russia) defeated Japan to become the first Women's world cup winner

(The Soviets have been in the top 3 in this event 6 times but only won once (1973); The Cuban women have won this event more times than anyone with 6 victories, China women have placed in the top 3 more times than anyone with 7 times. )
