The battle of Verdon was a major battle during World War 1 on the Western Front. It was fought on hilly terrain north of the city of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France. The Battle of Verdun is generally described by historians as a French tactical victory.
It is also viewed as a costly stalemate in terms of strategic results.
The German High Command failed to achieve its two objectives: 1) the capture of the city of Verdun and 2) a much higher casualty count inflicted on the French adversary.
The French Army finally rolled back the German Army, but not as far as the initial German starting lines of February 1916 around Verdun.
