National Prohibition of alcohol in the US outlawed the production, transportation and sale (but not the consumption) of Alcoholic Beverages. The movement began in the mid-nineteeth century and culminated with the ratification of the 18th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.
National Prohibition started in January of 1920 and led to the widespread use of illicit alcoholic beverages. This was a great opening for "the Mob" and they sold illegal alcohol (bootleg) to saloons and back-street clubs where the elite went. There was bath-tub gin, etc. There were many deaths from this form of alcohol because it was often contaminated. Carrie Nation smashed saloons against prohibition. She was against alcohol and liquor.

∙ 15y agoAlcohol was prohibited in the United States because during the Progressive Movement, many radical groups were fighting for conservative measures. Especially because of the industrial age, and because men were "ruining" their lives with various measures (alcohol was one of them), people protested for prohibiting alcohol (passed as amendment #18) and also for tidying up the government (amendment #16 & 17).

∙ 7y agoMany people blamed alcohol for the social problems in the United States starting in the 1840s to early 1900s. So there was a push for an amendment to ban liquor sales. The eighteenth amendment went into effect on January 16, 1920. However this led to organized crime. The social problems did not go away, they got worse. Eventually people voted for the 21st amendment in December 5, 1933 which allowed state and local control of alcohol. So areas that wanted to stay dry, could stay dry. And states that wanted alcohol, could have it.
