Sheffield Cricket Club was created in 1751.
Sheffield United was originally known as the Sheffield United Cricket Club when it was founded in 1889. The football club was established as a branch of the cricket club and adopted the name Sheffield United to distinguish itself. Over time, the focus shifted entirely to football, and the club is now simply known as Sheffield United.
