If you are playing doubles(with another person on your side), then you and your partner decide who hits the balls that go in the left box and who gets the ones on the right. Another use of the white lines is that when you practice hitting forehands, you hit the ball to the other person's right box. That goes on and it should work out fine. Same goes to backhands.
Bob Hewitt's doubles partner was Frew McMillan. They formed a successful doubles team in tennis during the 1960s and 1970s, winning multiple Grand Slam titles together.

Single tennis matches differ from doubles only in that it is played with two people, one on each team. Where a doubles tennis match is played by four people, two on each team. The other difference is they may bounce the ball twice before hitting it rather than just once.
