The National Hockey League was formed in the summer of 1917. In its first season, 1917-18, it started with four teams, the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, Montreal Canadiens and Montreal Wanderers. When the Wanderers arena burned down, the new league finished with three teams and barely survived. However, it obviously did and grew into the multi-billion dollar sports league it is today.
