R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company dropped its sponsorship of the Winston Cup Series after the 2003 season. In 2004, Nextel started sponsoring the top series and the name was changed. It's now known as the Sprint Cup Series, due to the Sprint-Nextel merger.
2003 was the last year that Winston sponsored NASCAR with Matt Kenseth winning the last Winston Cup.
Winston was force out of sponsoring certain things. Then Nextel stepped in, thus we now have the nextel cup. Winston was also force out of NHRA drag racing, now we have the poweraid championship. After it was deemed illegal to advertise tobacco products, Winston was forced to stop sponsering NASCAR's premier series.
Richard Petty ran a Ford during the 1969 NASCAR season due to a dispute with Chrysler. In a bid to win Petty back, Chrysler developed the Plymouth Superbird, one of the most famous cars in NASCAR history. Petty switched back to Chrysler in 1970.
