Renault started racing their own Formula One car in 1977, 2 years after creating Renault Sport. This team, famous for the 'Yellow Teapot' and the development of turbo engines, continued racing until 1985. At this point, Renault decided to concentrate on building engines for the sport and power cars to 6 consecutive Constructors titles and 5 Drivers titles between 1992 and 1997. The company then left the sport before returning to supply the Benneton team with engines once again, and then buying out the team prior to the start of the 2002 season. Since then, they have won 2 Drivers and 2 Constructors titles (2005 & 2006) with their own team, with the low points being implicated in the second Spygate scandal in 2007 (found guilty but no punishment) and the Crashgate episode of 2008. For the 2010 season, the Luxembourg investment firm Genii Capital acquired a large stake of the team, thus ensuring the Enstone-based squad can continue into the future.
