My home town. Spfld, Massachusetts. James Naismith was a gym teacher who invented the game using peach baskets mounted to poles. He continued to develop the game as it caught on with neighborhood children. It didn't hurt that there are three colleges in the City and Springfield continues a peach basket festival during March Madness to celebrate it's birthplace. Naismith had great foresight on the game and also introduced cheerleaders to the game early on. Basketball was the first sport to host scantily clad cheerleaders because it was played indoors in the winter time. His teams cheerleaders were called the (go figure) "Peaches". And they created quite a stir when they did their act (Naismith also had an affinity for top heavy female cheerleaders). Soon the fans coined a new name for the cheerleaders; the "Melons." This also caused quite a commotion since melons had nothing to do with creation of the game and some fans (females and priests) found it offensive. But Mr. Naismith cleared it all up by explaining that many people saw the basketball itself as a melon and less like a peach. And the argument died down. Fortunately, you can still come to Springfield today and see plenty of melons and they have a big Museum shaped like a giant...melon with little nippl...lights all over it.

Just answered this question a few mins ago, I wrote an article on it once. Basketball came around in America in the 1920's when a coach needed a game for his boys to play in the winter, so he attached a basket to a wall originally much higher up than the average basketball net now. and the boys would have to throw a leather ball into the basket and each basket they got they would earn a point. at that time the basket had a bottom so each time someone got it in they would have to climb up and manually take the ball out. It was only a few years later when a female coach came up with the idea of a basket with no bottom. Basketball has come a looooong way since then

Basketball has evolved many commonly used techniques of shooting, passing, and dribbling, as well as specialized player positions and offensive and defensive structures (player positioning) and techniques. While competitive basketball is carefully regulated, numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. Competitive basketball is primarily an indoor sport played on carefully marked and maintained basketball courts, but less regulated variations are often played outdoors in both inner city and rural areas.

There has also been a development of equipment where originally basketball was played with a football. The first balls made were brown then became orange so that it would be easier to see the ball on court, Dribbling was not part of the original game except for the "bounce pass" to teammates. Passing the ball was the primary means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the asymmetric shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a major part of the game around the 1950s, as manufacturing improved the ball shape.
