the BYU cougars
David Dixon was the original founder of the USFL as he began his pursuit of the USFL, as we know it, back in 1980. The league was formed and announced a press conference in 1982 with play beginning in 1983. You may find an interesting history of the USFL in Jim Byrne's book "The $1 League: The Rise And Fall Of The USFL." It is out of print, but your library or inter-library loan should be able to help you.
49ers and Bucs
Steve Young was the first overall pick, selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft. The Supplemental Draft was a draft of USFL and CFL players by NFL teams that was designed to keep teams from having bidding wars for the players which would have driven the salaries of all players up.
Young played Football (football, not soccer) as QB (#8) for the 49ers.
