Der Blaue Reiter
Franz Marc was a member of Der Blaue Reiter who loved to feature animals in his work because he thought they were pure and honest life forms. Marc saw society as being corrupt, so he turned to animals for inspiration. In fact, the "Reiter" (meaning horseman) part of Der Blaue Reiter came from Marc because he liked horses.

Study for the cover of der Blaue Reiter Almanac, 1911 is the paiting Libby used to track down Nicholas Parsons. As I recall, that Kandinsky was a minor oil sketch -- likely borrowed for the film from a private collection. Scanning the film's credits might clue you in a bit more, but that's not a sure bet.Because it is not a substantial oil, you probably won't have luck tracking down the name or location. Thousands of Kandinsky paintings and sketches are owned by private collectors all over the world -- therefore the information about those works is kept private. The character of Nick did state that the painting was from Kandinsky's Blue Rider period.
For instance Picasso. And Matisse's colleagues in the Fauves group: Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy, van Dongen. All those in France. There were, of course, important groups in Germany: Der Blaue Reiter, and Die Brücke.
