It actually depends which one you mean. 'China' is just the American word that the Americans call it, but in china we call it "zhong guo" which means Middle Kingdom, because at the time of ancient China, they considered themselves in the center of the world.

The Chinese people call themselves the children of Han basically because the period if the Han dynasty brought alot of great development and civilization to their wold...example of this is the Chinese silk road that gave them chance to have contact with the rest of the world
There is a city called "Han Zhong" in China, over 2200 years ago an Emperor Liu Bang start from this place as a mayor, he defeated another famous Hero Xiang Yu, and then take control the most part of China today. After that Liu Bang Called himself "Han Zhong Wang" which means king of Han Zhong, and start the Han Dynasty (BC 202- AD 220). Over 400 years of control make people call themselves the children of Han until today. Before that, Chinese call themselves the children of Huaxia, Chinese people still say that today, Hua and Xia are two old nationality which are the origin of Han nationality.
Zhongguó, meaning 'the central Country'. That however is not what they used to call their country, that is what they still call it today. And who can blame them?
China's history can be tracked back over 3,500 years, making it the oldest living civilization. The ancient Chinese called their land Chung Kuo or "middle country"
