These were used in the opening ceremony to provide lights in the audience - they are LED panels which can be lit in multiple colours to make patterns etc. in the arena. If you watch the opening ceremony you can see them in use.

Well, Tan Dun, who composed the soundtrack scores for "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and "Hero", composed the music for the Medal presentation ceremonies, but a man named Chen Qigang composed the music that is heard during the Opening and Closing ceremonies. I have been obsessed with finding the music that played during the opening ceremony since I watched it, but sadly have not been able to find it as of yet. I have only found out who composed the music but not where to download or purchase it. I really hope they release a CD with all of the wonderful music soon...i might explode if they don't.
