The year was 1966 ... the Grand Final:- between Collingwood and St. Kilda:
Only 1 minute to go, scores were level ... when suddenly, Barry Breen scooped up the ball and snapped a point, and St Kilda won by just the solitary point.
So, even then, they just scraped home by the single solitary point and Barry Breen may remain their hero forever!
The first team to win a premiership was Essendon in 1897. That was in VFL. The first team to win after the AFL formation was Collingwood, in 1990. However, St. Kilda were the first wooden spooners in 1897. ST. Kilda have enough wooden spoons to give to a whole team! ... to be precise: 26. Essendon won the first Premiership flag via a round robin-type season. (In those years, only 8 teams were playing: St. Kilda, Essendon, Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood, South Melbourne, Melbourne and Geelong.)

It is almost certain that St. Kilda will eventually win another premiership. St Kilda has gone the third longest of any team in the AFL without a premiership. Only the Western Bulldogs (previously, Footscray) and Melbourne Demons have gone longer. In 2009, two of these teams were in the top 3 favourites to win the premiership, which posed a great, exciting finish to the season. St Kilda were 'every chance' to win the flag, which would have been a long time between drinks; but 2009 wasn't to be, though could still have been just the start to a new era in the St Kilda Football Club's history. Hi, 3.14159...etc! St. Kilda were (after 20 rounds) still undefeated in 2009, but didn't finish undefeated. They let their form slip at the crucial moment, and paid the ultmate price - the Grand Final loss. Many had their eyes also on the mighty Pies near the season's end and thought they might give'em all a huge fright come Grand Final day, but that wasn't to be either, as Geelong finally came home with the bacon, turning out Premiers - another club which had only won the one premiership over more than 40 years before 2009. Nevertheless, there's always next Year Sainters! :-) Given this year's, solid, preparatory lead up, there is always a great chance for a premiership from them for the year 2010! ;) St Kilda will get it in 2010 Egg on face, much?

It depends by what criteria you're measuring. If it's a calculation based on time in the competition against premiership's won against number of times finishing last, then yes, St Kilda is the worst performed team in the AFL.
In Season 2010, St Kilda won 15 home and away matches. It also lost 6 games and drew one.
