The Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics were held in the same year every four years until 1992. The summer games continued on their four-year cycle, but the winter games were held again just two years later in 1994 before returning to a four-year cycle.
The IOC voted in the 1980's to have the Winter Games not be in the same year as the Summer Games. Thus 1992 was the last year they were both in the same year followed by another Winter Games in 1994, Summer Games in 1996, Winter in 1998 and so on. The next Winter Games is in Vancouver in 2010 and the Summer Games are in 2012 in London.
