Franchise was started in 1901 The Yankees since 1913

The New York Yankees franchise began in Baltimore, and the team was called the Baltimore Orioles. The team played in the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs which became part of the Major Leagues in 1901.

The team was then moved to New York in 1903, and played at Hilltop Park in Manhattan. The ballpark was built at one of the highest points in Manhattan and so the team was then called the Highlanders.

After the Highlanders moved to the Polo Grounds the team name was then changed to the Yankees in 1913.
