In order to get there: Overthrow the 'Dictatorship of the bourgeoisie' and replace it with 'dictatorship of the proletariat'. This means a class dictatorship, not what the word dictatorship usually means. This means there would still be democracy among the vanguard and/or working class (depending on situation, the whole working class is unrealistic when most of them are being wiped out by counter-revolutionary war aided by the UK, US, Japan, France and others).
Where did it go wrong then? The working class was mostly destroyed in the civil war. This led to a situation where the party had nothing to hold check on it, and a thermidor could emerge.
