It was random really. They kept sending names in, and the Jockey Club kept sending them back, so by the time they got to Secretariat they were pretty far down the list on rejected names. It may have had something to do with Miss Hamm's job as a secretary, but I doubt it.

Not on a regular basis, usually, although jockeys who aren't "big names" might. Generally a jockey will try to ride the horse in a workout beforehand, and most people will have a regular jockey they use for each horse.

Race horse have to get their names approved through the Jockey Club before they can be registered. The Jockey Club have many rules but two of the most important are the name must be no longer than 18 characters and no two names can sound alike. They actually run the name through a phonetic filer to insure that not to name sound too similar to each other.
