There weren't many to speak of. Irvin was the 15th of 17 children born to a Fort Lauderdale, Florida minister and his wife. They were poor, and Irvin remembers having to battle his siblings for food.

But he excelled at football and became a highly recruited high school star before deciding to attend the University of Miami. He was a star wide receiver on Miami's 1987 national championship team coached by jimmy Johnson. He was the Dallas Cowboys' first-round selection in the 1988 draft, and was reunited with Johnson when he became the Dallas head coach in 1989.
