On May 16, 1957, New York Yankees Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Hank Bauer, Yogi Berra, Johnny Kucks, Billy Martin and all of their wives (except Martin) were at the club to celebrate Martin's 29th birthday. The headliner for the night was Sammy Davis Jr. During Davis's performance a group of clubers, obviously drunk, started to interfere with the show and shouting racial slurs at the black singer. The racism angered the Yankees, especially Martin (his roommate was Elston Howard, the first black Yankee). Tensions erupted between the two groups, and the resulting fight made newspaper headlines. Several Yankees were fined. A cluber sued Bauer for aggravated assault, but Bauer was found not guilty. Martin was traded to the Athletics, with this incident cited as a main cause.
