Mail was originally carried on foot by courier or any person traveling in the general direction of the location it was addressed to. When the carrier was no longer going in that direction he passed them on to someone that was, usually at the inn he was staying in that night. Special couriers, for kings or the military, usually went directly passing to the next courier in relay (this is where relay races began).
