The first recognized Tae Kwon Do school was Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo, founded in 1944 in Seoul, Korea, by Grandmaster Lee Won Kuk. Originally influenced by Japanese karate during the occupation period, it later evolved into a distinctly Korean martial art focused on powerful kicks, disciplined forms, and strong philosophical values. Chung Do Kwan played a major role in shaping modern Taekwondo, contributing to its techniques, ranking systems, and global spread. Over time, various kwans merged under unified organizations, but this pioneering school remains historically significant in the foundation and development of Taekwondo worldwide.
