It has connections to all field/lawn type games and is derived from the game of "real tennis" or "royal tennis" sometimes referred to as the sport of kings. The term has been around since about the 12th century to distinguish it from the ancient games.

The modern game of tennis was originally called lawn tennis. This was started in England in the late 1800's. There was also a game called real tennis. Our tennis today has a combination of both similar games.
