Stalin and Trotsky were among the top leaders of the Bolshevik Party after the Revolution and Civil War. They disliked one another intensely and had conflicting opinions on how to run the country after the revolution. Trotsky favored spreading communism to all countries as Marx and Lenin had envisioned. Stalin felt that they should establish communism firmly in one country first then move from there. Stalin also disliked Trotsky because he was Jewish and had only recently joined the Bolshevik Party.

After Lenin died in 1924, the two vied for control of the Communist Party and the country with Stalin winning and expelling Trotsky first from the Communist Party then from the country. In 1940, Trotsky was living in Mexico in exile and Stalin had an undercover agent assassinate him.

Trotsky and Stalin were both members of the Bolshevik Party that overthrew the Russian Provisional Party in the October Revolution of 1917. At first, Trotsky was head and shoulders above Stalin. Trotsky not only was regarded as a "Marxist" intellectual, but also had the job of winning the Russian Civil War that developed after the Bolshevik revolution. Trotsky was the head of the Red Army that opposed the Bolsheviks.Early on in the new Soviet regime, Stalin was considered a good "organization" man, and was not considered a threat to the "Revolution". That all changed with the unexpected death of Vladimir Lenin. With the revolution's leader now dead, Stalin took advantage of the situation and deflected efforts by Trotsky to lead the Communist Party in what Trotsky believed was the proper direction for the new Soviet nation.

Stalin amassed the necessary votes required to oust Trotsky from any chance of power in the government and to finally have Trotsky exiled.

Many Marxists and communists world-wide were influenced by Trotsky, even in his exile. Stalin in a sense "feared" Trotsky and had to eliminate him from speaking out against Stalin and his policies that Trotsky believed were counter-revolutionary at best and undermined Stalin's claim of absolute power.
