Actually worked as a helper to his father, Cassius Clay, Sr., who was a murals painter. In the 50's in Louisville, Ky, billboards were virtually unheard of in the city. Most advertisements were painted on the sides of buildings in the form of murals. Cassius Clay, Sr., was a noted and much sought after painter of these murals. While up on the scaffold painting, he would often need someone on the ground to get paint, clean brushes, get water and food or just be a helper. Cassius, Jr. and myself (at various times) would work for him as a helper. The pay (to me) was $0.50 per hour. His son, Cassius, Jr., probably was paid a similar wage. Aside from that job, Cassius never had a job after he won the gold medal in Rome in 1960. Born in 1942 and working for his Dad until he was 18 was the only job he ever had.
