Frame & or Solid structure
If you have ever played Basketball somewhere (or at your house) where they don't have a net it is kind of more difficult---sounds crazy I know. But when my net wasn't on my basketball hoop it was a lot harder to see if it actually went through the basket to keep the score. Other than that, there is really no other meaning to having the nets for basketballs. There is no advantage or disadvantage.
___
So you know if the ball went in if it didn't hit the rim or the back board. Sometimes I play in my back yard and when I make close shots from a long distance I cannot tell if they went in or not because the rim and the ball are both orange and I don't have a net.
____
To slow the drop speed of the ball after a basket is scored
____
So the ball goes down straight down instead of all over the baseline.
There's a net attached to the basket to keep the ball from flying away when you swish it. Instead, it forces the ball straight down (most of the time) so that it is easier to collect it. If they didnt have nets, the ball would be in the third row almost everytime in NBA games and there would be alot of occurences if the ref couldn't tell if the shot went in or not.
It is a frame structure because it is curved, hollow, and protects (air) what's inside.
