I believe what you mean is what time were swords used? Swords originate in the Middle East at around 3300 BCE, this became the basis for the Short-sword which was primarily used in battle until a short time after the fall of Rome in 476 CE. The short-sword was still popular though through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Durring the Middle Ages, Longer and Broader swords came about, made of fashioned steel. These modified Spathas were popular with the vikings and their raids against the Franks in 700 CE. These swords became into Longswords of the 11th century. These soon also evolved into the Broadsword in the 12th and 13th century, used by the men of the Renaissance in more heated dueling. The broadsword was taken abord with Pirates, evolving into the Cutlass, while back in Europe, it evolved into Rapiers. The invention of gunpowder effected the usage to the sword, but the sword was still carried by generals, conquistadors, and musketeers. In Japan, the Katana became popular, used by Samurai against both invading Samurai Clans, and eventually foreign peoples from Europe. Swords were still used in WWI, but it wasn't until after the war, their usage in Europe died out. While still in Japan, the Katana continued to be used even until after the fall of the Samurai, all the way into WWII, (where Imperial Japanese soldiers carried them) and dying out in the 1940's along with the empire. In the Vietnam War, swords were still used by Vietcong soldiers. While today, swords are no longer used in killing men, their legacy lives on in how we view them, admiring the European style in the sport of Fencing, and the Oriental swords in the practice of Kendo.
