The first Olympic champion in swimming was Alfréd Hajós of Hungary who won the 100 meter freestyle in a time of 1 minute 22.2 seconds. The event was held in the Bay of Piraeus and not in a pool.
Compare that time to the winners of the 100 meter freestyle at the 2008 Games in Beijing ... Alain Bernard of France won the men's competition in a time of 47.21 seconds and Britta Steffen of Germany won the women's competition in a time of 53.12 seconds.
