Stay very calm, don't move, and try to float on your back. Then, yell for help without thrashing. If no one is around, try to drift to the side of the pool by making motions to move, but don't thrash about, since thrashing will only worsen the situation.
If you are sinking to the bottom of the pool, remain calm, not thrashing, and try to make your way to the surface by kicking your feet and pushing with your hands. Don't thrash; thrashing will do nothing.
You should always make sure that there's a supervisor with you while swimming (if you don't know how to swim). If not, stay on the shallow end and don't take any risks in going to the deep end.
