Wayne Gretzky, who played in the NHL from 1979 to 1999, is nicknamed "The Great One," and is generally regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time. Gretzky played in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, and played one season in the World Hockey Association during 1978-79 with the Indianapolis Racers and the Edmonton Oilers before the WHA folded and some of the teams -- including Edmonton -- were absorbed by the NHL.

He tallied more points (goals and assists combined) than any other player in NHL history and is the only player to score more than 200 points in a season.
