well, the person that catches the ball can either be a running back or receiver. A running back isn't primarily a position to catch the football because he usually runs the ball or blacks for the quarterback. There are two kinds of receives there are tight ends, and there can be either two, one, or no tight ends in a play, the usually block but when there is a pass, they usually go out for the pass. The other kind of receivers are called wide receivers, and there are smaller groups of receivers within the wide receivers like flankers. These receivers block on run plays and go out on almost every single pass play, so very rarely will they not go out for a pass during a pass play. Running backs are short and very strong people who can take a hit and give some, tight ends are tall and solid players, so they can block and not be hit over so easily. Wide receivers are tall and skinny, so they are fast and can reach over short defenders, some exceptions would be wide receivers like Wes Welker or Deion Branch or DeSean Jackson.
